Captain Ganja recorded a couple of live broadcasts from the Club 230 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in May, 2006, to a small handful of internet listeners. These shows were stashed away in the Captain’s personal archives, and now he’s decided to share them with us.
First, we have the Radio Free Euphoria Smoke Signal Test via Complex Variables Studio, recorded live on Saturday, May 6, 2006. This is followed by the Radio Free Euphoria Morning Madness show presented live on Friday, May 19, 2006, at around 7 in the morning. These lively shows were produced by Merlin, Zoron and Putt-Putt for Slohbco Films.

Allan sometimes allows others to do his weekly radio show Allan Weiner Worldwide when he is out of town or otherwise unable to do it himself. Jane and I have been privileged to host Al’s show on occasion (most recently on Halloween earlier this year). While scouring the archives this afternoon, I came across a rare occasion when Michael Ketter hosts. I don’t think this aircheck has even been posted before. This is a rip from WBCQ’s webcast, which they were relaying from Michael’s Pittsburgh studio webcast. Despite the audio processing artifacts present in the recording, it is a classic and should be a part of all Michael Ketter libraries.

After an evening of live broadcasts at the 2004 SWL Winterfest from Timtron, the Lost Discs Radio Show, Pan Global Wireless, Michael Ketter, and Juliet’s Wild Kingdom, the party continued in Room 107 at the Best Western in Towamencin until the early hours of the morning. This zaniness was broadcast live on WBCQ via a nifty telephone patch, and we have some airchecks of this event.
On these recordings you can hear Michael Ketter, Paul Shalbetter, Captain Ganja, and many others. Ganja and Michael conduct a long interview with Jay Smilkstein starting at about 40 minutes into the 0600 recording. Jay discusses, among other things, Uncle Samuel Schmuckstein (not his real name), the A&P in Mount Kisco, marijuana, the post-industrial society, freon, old cars and microbuses, AM radio, and a dentist named Doctor Suk.

You Are What You Think is one of the finest creations of Michael Ketter and his Complex Variables Studio. From the opening audio animations, to the theme song by The Five Jones Boys, and into an hour of nonstop free form comedy, Michael demonstrates his mastery of radio theater. You Are What You Think is irreverent, hilarious, and is one of the best shows ever to air on WBCQ.
This is the earliest You Are What You Think show in my archive. This show ran from 2002 until early fall 2003. Over time, we hope to post all of the extant airchecks we have.

Michael Ketter and his Complex Variables Studios produced a number of radio theater shows for WBCQ between 1999 and 2005. The two productions that brought together a rag-tag bunch of friends that we remember most are You Are What You Think and it’s immediate successor, Radio Reaction Theater. For Halloween 2003, Michael found himself alone in the studio and handled the entire production himself. The result is one of the finest shows for WBCQ he has yet to do. There are so many pieces of this show that are timeless—Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) News to name but one. This show is a classic. To top it off, it’s a Halloween show!
