The last remaining piles of snow from the Blizzards of 2010 were rapidly melting in Kulpsville this year, with near perfect weather being the backdrop for the the 23rd annual SWL Winterfest.
This year’s Fest was a most interesting event. The forums we attended were, as usual, of the highest quality. The fest hotel, as always, presented some jamba; in fact, there were a lot of strange and anomalous events at this year’s event. For example, WBCQ 5.110 had a transmitter issue on Saturday and none of our marathon six hour free form mix made it to air. Other strange things were reported, such as local fest transmitter problems (if one were to know of such things), dead batteries, exploding Audacity files, busted cameras and minidisc recorders, broken down ice machines and elevators, and the attempt by some fest participants to mix Utz Crab Chips with guacamole dip. This may be the last year the Fest is held at the Best Western Towamencin; the location for next year’s event is undermined at this time.
We managed to see the big raffle at the end of the Fest proceedings. Lots of cool prizes and several radios were handed out by Jay Smilkstein, president of the North American Shortwave Association.
Here’s our collection of audio from the Fest weekend:
- Live from room 407 at the Winterfest, Friday, March 5, 2010, 6PM: Includes the Pirate Radio Forum hosted by George Zeller, recorded earlier in the day. Live off-air sampling of a strange station on 6925 am follows the Pirate Forum recording. (mp3) (alternate recording of the Pirate Forum here via Ragnar)
- Allan Weiner Worldwide, Friday, March 5, 2010, 8PM. Allan wasn’t at the Fest this year, but we did call in and give him an update. (mp3)
- Live from room 407 at the Winterfest, Saturday March 6, 2010, 6PM, with Cosmikdebris, Jane, Kracker, Sycko, and various guests and dignitaries. Over six hours of free form madness. (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6)

Steve and Janice presented a nice analysis of the recently completed SWL Winterfest on their weekly radio show this morning on CKUT 90.3 Montreal. CKUT experienced some computer issues a couple of weeks ago, so their archives are not on the internet for the time being. However, we are pleased to present this weeks show for you, recorded live off the internet.
Note that our weekly broadcast of the International Radio Report is moving this week to a new time of Thursday at 8:30PM eastern on the Area 51 broadcast on WBCQ, following Glenn Hauser’s World of Radio, also at a new time of Thursday at 8:00PM eastern time on WBCQ 5.110.

Here’s our collection of Tim’s shows as relayed on WBCQ 7415 and 5110 from the 2009 Winterfest. The shows were relayed from Tim’s room using a low power, full fidelity AM transmitter, and received in our room and relayed to WBCQ. The receiver used was a vintage Hallicrafters S-38 that Tim has tricked out to maximize audio fidelity. The audio bandwidth on this rig is 20 to 30 MHz wide, resulting in audio that is very close to FM in quality (albeit in mono instead of stereo). Unfortunately there is some hum present from the hotel’s power plant and the fact that we were four floors up and unable to obtain a sufficient ground. The early shows were relayed on AM 650 and the later shows were on shortwave 7415, and because of this the hum is much less notable on the later shows.

Very late on Saturday night, in fact, it was Sunday morning at around 2:30am, the slobs that manage Radio Jamba International decided to roll tape of the madness they were spewing on FM 91.9 and shortwave AM 6950 at the Winterfest. The result is this stinky aircheck. This is pretty raw and loose, and despite the feedback and all the RF floating around in the room, it came out okay. Is this phase two of the Loafhead Last Call?

A tradition at the SWL Winterfest is the appearance on the airwaves of The Voice of Pancho Villa, celebrating the first fest 22 years ago. These short broadcasts feature fest participants in topical humor and are anxiously awaited. This one aired last night at midnight on various local low power stations, and was also on WBCQ 5.110.
